Cricket – Champions League 20/20
Congratulations to Seth Rance for being selected in the Central Districts team to contest the 10 team Champions League 20/20 commencing 10 September in South Africa. This competition involves the top domestic sides from seven countries.

Word has it that Seth has been performing brilliantly for his side in the Lincolnshire League during the winter. He has helped his club beat the team that was top of the league for the past 6 seasons, carried out schools coaching, doubled the number of juniors wanting to play cricket and been a superb ambassador for the club and a great supporter of Greytown. His club are rapt and hugely proud of his efforts and commitment.

Volunteers of the Month – Kim & Steve Ryan
Like many in Greytown Kim & Steve go quietly about their ways as volunteers to help their kids play sport. Kim has been with Kia Kaha Hockey for 5 years and has taken on coaching as well as being a member of the Committee. She also referees Indoor & Summer Hockey teams.

Kim’s allegiance to Kia Kaha goes back to primary school days when she played for the club. She has always taken her commitment to her teams seriously and worked hard to ensure the kids get the most out of their sport. In 2009 her Fireballs team won their grade in the Wairarapa competition and is again top of their grade in 2010 under the watchful eyes of coaches Kim and Keryn Evans.

Kim’s other half, Steve, is involved each week coaching the Under 8s rugby team. Son Jack has been playing rugby since he was 4 so along with Jacks commitment came dad’s coaching commitment through the grades.

As with many of the coaches the follow-on of taking up a coaching position is being a committee member. Steve has duly taken this on and contributes to keeping JAB strong in Greytown.

Thanks Kim & Steve, the Clubs think your contribution is simply awesome!

Hockey Player of the Week
Well done Ella Fenwick, Thundersticks 6 aside team, on being the ‘Player –of-the-Week’.

to attend. This year there are three vacancies for Independent Board Member positions. Details can be found elsewhere in the Grapevine.

Volunteer of the Month
Our volunteer of the month is Rowan Skinner, President of Greytown Junior Soccer Club. In this role Rowan has done a great job over the last two seasons in co-ordinating operations, running meetings, filing match results and providing assistance to volunteers.

Under Rowan’s leadership the club is thriving and boasts the largest membership of all Greytown junior clubs. In 2010 the club initiated a football academy which markedly improved players’ skills, fitness and agility levels. Rowan also manages a Kuranui football team and prior to her involvement with soccer was a hockey volunteer for several years.

Thanks Rowan, the club is delighted to acknowledge your commitment and effort.

All Whites highlight importance of developing children's sporting expertise

The performance of the All Whites in this year’s FIFA World Cup highlights the importance of developing children’s sporting expertise through effective teaching, according to physical education researcher Dennis Slade. Mr Slade, a senior lecturer in Massey University’s College of Education says making the most of education opportunities in the wake of the All White’s success in South Africa will ensure it won’t be another 28 years before a New Zealand football team takes the world stage again.

“Quite a lot is known about how expertise in sport is developed and there are clear pointers as to what we can do to ensure we provide opportunities for that expertise to be uncovered in our children,” Mr Slade says. The stages for development of expertise in sport are seen as: the sampling stage, 6-12 years; the specialising stage, 13-15 years and the investment stage, 16 years and over – a period where school education figures prominently in young people’s lives.”

He says it is important during the sampling stage that children are exposed to a range of different games so they can find the one in which “they click”.  In team games, the sampling years are characterised by supportive coaches or teachers, not necessarily experts, providing positive, fun, exciting learning experiences,” he says.

“Research has shown that children aged between seven and eight years old improve their performance if confined to one sport. However, when exposed to more than one sport their creative responses to tactical issues improves both in the specific sport of choice but also in other sports. Mr Slade says policy makers can exert an influence. “They could, for instance, instigate policy that would require Colleges of Education to provide minimum amounts of time in the preparation for teaching in the liberal arts,” he says.

“By time, I mean face to face with lecturers trained to teach them in these subjects. Just reading about it, or writing some reflective review on-line of an article on how to teach children games is not ideal preparation for actually teaching movement skills to children in those crucial sampling years.

“Experiences of elite performers in sport during their sampling years are typically marked by motivating, exciting, fun, and positive learning experiences from coaches or teachers.  Any reduction of time spent in preparing trainees to apply these experiences through physical education can seriously curtail the path to sporting expertise for the next generation of prospective All-Whites”.

JUNE 2010

The Senior Reserves have won three games and lost seven and are now looking to defend the President’s Cup Plate they won last year.

Rippa junior rugby in the Wairarapa is currently in full swing with the programme being run in thirty primary schools throughout the region. Three sessions are being held in all schools and are based around skill development, participation and fun. Term three will see the commencement of the Union’s cluster tournaments involving years three & four, five & six and seven & eight year students.

Junior Hockey
A number of junior players were taken to Wellington to watch the test match between the Blacksticks Womens Team and India. Although India won the game 3-1 the Blacksticks came out on top the following day with a 1-0 victory. Check out the photos in Sport & Leisure’s window (Town Centre).

Congratulations to the Hockey Club’s players of the day during May – Amy Rossiter-Stead (Fireballs), Francesca Hewison (Allstars) and Adam Simmonds (Ministicks).

Community Gym
Winter is a good time to be using the facilities at Greytown Community Gym. The Gym is based at the Rugby Club in East St and is available 6am - 8pm (weekdays) and 7am – 8pm (weekends). Contact Marie Ballantyne for an information booklet 06 304 8577.

Greytown Swimming Club
Despite currently being in the grip of winter & the first snow appearing on the Rimutakas, the Swimming Club has been busy over the past couple of months since the outdoor pool closed in late March. The Club has been able to keep a squad of 14 keen kids ranging in age from 6 - 12 in the water since mid April by hiring the Carterton Indoor Pool. The Club is presently hiring the pool for 1 hour each Sunday, & with the assistance of 3 volunteer coaches and Russell Geange has been able to offer swim training. All of the kids are making great progress. Due to the pool being only 3 lanes, these Sunday sessions are at full capacity, which once again highlights the issue of available indoor pool capacity in the South Wairarapa.

Football
Greytown Football Club would like to invite the members of the Greytown Junior Soccer Club and other supporters to a Disco at the clubrooms. Sat July 3rd 5pm – 7pm. $5 incl sausage and a drink. Enquiries contact Trish Morison – 304 8667

Volunteer of the Month
Our volunteer of the month is Dan Carlisle. Over the last 3 years Dan has been coaching junior hockey players and committing up to 5 hours to coaching each week. This season he is coaching the Allstars 11 aside team of 7-8 year olds. Dan is also learning the art of refereeing and has refereed a number of junior games for Wairarapa Hockey Assn. When qualified, Dan will referee adult club games and eventually representative games.

Dan started playing hockey 10 years ago at age 5 and has clocked up many hours as a club volunteer.

Thank you, Dan for your volunteering efforts. Keep up the good work - Your ‘Volunteer of the Month’ award is well deserved

Volunteer Awareness Week
The week of June 20-26 is volunteer awareness Week during which the contribution of volunteers is acknowledged. The theme for 2010 is “Volunteering across the Generations”.

A key objective of the week is to encourage more people to volunteer. The theme will highlight the opportunities for volunteering across all generations, how different forms of volunteering appeal to particular generational groups and various examples of intergenerational volunteering.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of a club and are motivated by different things. The basic motivations that lead to people volunteering include:
helping others , having an interest in the work or activity, wanting to learn and gain experience, having a lot of free time, being devoted to the cause, knowing someone who is involved.
Because different things motivate volunteers they may require different treatment. That’s why it’s sensible to have a way of managing volunteers. Good volunteer management creates a win-win situation for the volunteer and the club.
Club-volunteer relationships can be very one-sided. Clubs often seek volunteers to help them develop without taking into account what the volunteer might need. Because volunteers are an integral part of sport and recreation clubs, it is important that they feel valued and part of a club – this is the essence of good volunteer management.
Volunteers who feel that they have made a worthwhile contribution to their club, have been appropriately rewarded, recognised and feel respected are more likely to contribute to the club again.

MAY 2010

Fun Debate
The dinner/debate was a fun evening and thoroughly enjoyed by the 140 who attended. The debaters did a wonderful job of entertaining with a wide range of interesting debating techniques employed at various times.

A big thank-you to our sponsors, donors of prizes and the debating teams who made the evening a success. Sponsors – White Swan, Workingmens Club, Liquor Plus, Mangan Graphics & Fonterra Brands. Prize donors - Country Traders Antiques & Interiors, Mango Furniture & Interiors, Michael Nalder Interiors, The Green Man Hotel, Rob Yule. Debating teams – Pat McKenna (Chair), Mark Childs, Chris Cogdale, Belinda Cordwell, Brent Gear, Alistair Spierling & Rita Stirling.

A vote of thanks also to the Sport & Leisure Board who got in behind the event and made it a real team effort and to all those who supported the event by buying tickets.

Cricket
Congratulations to Greytown Cricket Club and Seth Rance on becoming finalists in Wairarapa Sports Awards (winners announced 12 May).

Junior Football
There are 95 children playing football this season, a 10% increase on 2009.Well done to the Committee who have progressed a number of initiatives on the coaching and Academy fronts.

Junior Rugby
Congratulations to Greytown JAB on once again sharing the Slater Cup spoils with Upper Hutt. Unfortunately they were not quite so successful in the annual Greytown Sevens where Carterton and MIS ran out the winners.

Volunteer of the Month
Our volunteer of the Month is Angela Bush. In the last 12 years Angela & her husband have built & lived in houses in both Greytown & Carterton. No matter where they are they have continued to loyally support Greytown JAB. This year all 3 of their children are playing for the Greytown Club (Lewis 11, Xavier 9, Paige 6)

For the past 2 years Angela has taken on the role of Club secretary. No easy task co-ordinating the various competitions that JAB runs - 7's tournaments, Upper Hutt exchange & of course all the organising & challenges that the standard winter season brings with it. It is never easy juggling these commitments on top of everyday family & a busy work life.

Angela is a dedicated sideline mum who goes the extra mile as well as being a true advocate for the game of rugby and the Greytown Club.

APRIL 2010

Fun Debate
There has been an excellent response to date for tickets to the dinner/debate evening on Friday 30 April (see flyer). This event is a first for the Society and an appropriate way to mark the beginnings of the Society when a dedicated group of volunteers set up a Sports Club Management Team in Greytown ten years ago.

The debating team has been carefully selected to provide great entertainment while grappling with the topic “Couch Potatoing is a Legitimate Sport”. The teams are:

For: Alistair Spierling (Manager, NZ Parole Board), Rita Stirling (Crafters Heaven), Brent Gear (Mediaworks Radio Host). Against: Belinda Cordwell (Formerly NZ No 1 Tennis player), Mark Childs (NZ Mortgage Broker of the Year 2009), Chris Cogdale (More FM Sports Show Host).

Pat McKenna will chair the debate and keep the teams in line (no chance!).

Prior to the debate there will be a 3 course dinner (wine included) followed by spot prize draws. So get your group together and come along for a fun evening. Contact Lois Pitt, 304 9711 or Marilla Rankin 304 8588 for tickets. Tickets are $50 with up to 10 people per table.

Greytown 1st Scout Group join Sport & Leisure Society
The Society is delighted to welcome the Scout group as a new member. Greytown 1st Scout Group has a very active group of 36 Keas, Cubs and Scouts and celebrated its centenary in 2009. The group is affiliated to Scouting New Zealand and meets on the third Monday of each month. The Scout Jamboree takes place at Mystery Creek, Hamilton early in 2011 and a number of the Greytown scouts will be attending.

Rugby

A Look Back – The Society Grows and Clubs Achieve Success
Greytown Community Sport & Leisure Society continues to grow having gained two new members in the last 6 months. The newly constituted Greytown Football Club (Adults) has joined together with the Greytown 1st Scouting Group.

The Society was set up several years ago to arrest declining sport participation numbers in the Greytown area and now has 16 member clubs/organisations. It helps club volunteers by providing planning assistance, help with funding applications, guidance on running clubs and preparation of financial accounts. Clubs remain independently run by volunteers. Greytown Trust Lands are the major supporter and the Society works closely with Sport Wellington which runs valuable coaching and administrative workshops for volunteers.

The overall objectives of the Society are to increase participation levels in sport and leisure activities and to ensure the long term financial viability and sustainability of its member clubs.

Over the last 12 months Greytown clubs have enjoyed more than their share of success both on and off the playing field.

Greytown Cricket Club completed a wonderful season by winning both the one-day and two-day competitions while the second and third teams contested the Open Grade 20/20 final. The junior hardball team won their competition only losing one game during the season. This is a great effort attributable not only to the players but also to the club’s initiative in taking on a professional coach, Steve Coleman, for the season. The coaching project involved a huge effort and pushed the club financially but the results speak for themselves. Several Greytown players represented Wairarapa and Seth Rance’s performances for Central Districts were outstanding.

Greytown Rugby Senior Reserves won the President’s Cup in 2009 winning their last five games.
Ten Greytown players gained representative honours and a former JAB player, Zac Guildford, gained All Black selection.

Greytown Swimming Club has gone from strength to strength. Their competitive swimmers received great coaching and competed throughout the winter away from home and consistently improved on their personal best times. The times being swum by Bella Biggs have been a highlight.

Greytown Tennis continues to run a very popular coaching programme for juniors and numbers participating get larger each year – play days and junior coaching were increased to 5 days a week. The Club now has a ball machine that has proved a great aid for the coaches. The Club also ran an extremely popular Community Tennis competition.

On a gentler front the Bridge Club’s Membership is thriving. Last year they ran a very successful and well attended open tournament and intend repeating this in 2010. They now use the latest technology for dealing and recording of scores and run lessons for those wishing to learn.

There is a growing interest in Gliding and the Gliding Club is making steady progress with a strong focus on teaching young people to fly. It now provides, in conjunction with Kuranui College, an NCEA Aviation course that opens up career opportunities in areas such as pilots, air traffic control, ground crew, meteorology, radio communications, aviation engineering & maintenance as well as science and physics.

The Bowling club had a very successful season despite the wet summer. Membership numbers have increased and the members enjoyed their share of success at regional events. The Business House Bowls evenings were well attended.

Greytown Community Gym based at the Rugby Club now has around 60 members compared with only 8 two years ago. Additional equipment has been acquired and a programme to upgrade the existing equipment is being developed.

Greytown Junior Soccer is now the most popular winter sport and every effort is being made to bounce off the success of the Phoenix and All Whites. The club has organised a pre-season fitness and skills academy for junior players so players will be raring to go when the season kicks off.

Greytown junior teams who won their grades last year were Kia Kaha Fireballs Hockey Team, Greytown B Netball Team, Greytown Under 9 JAB Rugby Team, Kia Kaha Bandits Hockey (Twilight) and the Greytown Hardball Junior Cricket Team. Many junior players gained representative selection.

Volunteer of the Month
Our volunteer of the Month is Wally Kenavan, Greytown Bowling Club. Wally cuts both greens three times a week which takes around 10 hours of his time. He also rolls the green on days that require Championship play or any other special tournament that is scheduled. Other duties include regular watering, spraying for pests and fertiliser application to keep the greens in tip top shape.

Wally also maintains the machinery and undertakes small jobs around the club that most members are not always aware of. His workload has increased considerably due to the Club’s head green keeper being unwell. However he has taken on this extra workload in his quiet and unassuming way.

The Club are delighted to nominate Wally for his effort and commitment.

Greytown Rugby Club
The Sevens Tournament held last month attracted 17 teams and was run very successfully by the Club’s volunteers. Oriental-Rongotai defeated Upper Hutt in the Senior final and Johnsonville won the Colts section.

FEBRUARY 2010

Greytown Cricket – a clean sweep of 20/20 Titles
Congratulations to the Cricket Club for a fantastic effort in winning the senior 20/20 competition and having the second and third teams in the Open Grade final. Well done to the Club for the initiative in employing Steve Coleman as coach This success shows the benefits of having a committed coach and players who are prepared to work on improving their skills. Great stuff!

Mention must be made of the performances of Seth Rance. As well as being a key player for Greytown Seth has performed superbly for the Central Districts Stags, particularly in the shorter versions of the game. He is now off to India for the Champions Trophy competition in July where the experience of playing in front of huge crowds will be something to savour and the rewards are  significant. Let’s hope that Seth’s success will inspire others to follow. It should also be mentioned that there have been 6 players from the Greytown Club selected for representative teams this season.

Greytown Junior Football Academy
It’s great to see a good turnout of children for the academy training sessions. The objectives of this Course are:
 (1) To improve the children’s footballing capability so they are worthy of
• attending regional representative trials this year or in future years with the potential
to advance to Capital Football’s District and Federation Academies
• selection for Junior Promotion League (JPL)
• attending the new Player Development Programme (PDP)which is planned to be
introduced by Capital Football in the Wairarapa by 2011, and

(2) To ensure that the children’s fitness and skill level allows them to make an immediate impact on
the playing field when the 2010 football season begins in April.

Well done to the Committee for taking this initiative.

Play days and coaching for juniors have been increased to 5 days per week.
